Privacy

Thorn shorthand is made by Manicgrin Media Ltd. This page covers the app and the website at thornshorthand.com.

The app

The app does not collect data about you. It has no accounts, no adverts and no analytics, and it does not send what you write anywhere.

The words you add under My words, and your keyboard preferences, are stored on your device. If you are signed in to iCloud, your added words are also kept in your own iCloud account, so they follow you between your devices. That storage belongs to you and is managed by Apple. We cannot see it.

How we count visits to this website

We keep a simple count of page views, visits, return visits, device type (phone, tablet or desktop) and the site that sent you here. That happens on our own server. We do not use Google Analytics, advertising cookies or any third-party tracker.

To tell a visit from a return visit we store a hashed form of your IP address and browser. We do not store the address itself, and we cannot turn the hash back into it. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we skip the count.

Cookies

This website sets no cookies for visitors and keeps nothing in your browser. The only cookie is a login cookie, set when the site’s owner logs in to the private admin pages.

If you sign up for news

The sign-up form asks for your email address and nothing else. We store the address, the page you signed up from, and the dates you asked, confirmed or unsubscribed. We also store a hashed form of your IP address, to slow down spam. We do not store the address itself, and we cannot turn the hash back into it.

You are only added once you press the link in the confirmation email. Until then we send you nothing else. We use your address only to tell you about Thorn shorthand, such as the app or the book. We do not sell it, share it, or add anything to your emails that tracks whether you opened them.

The confirmation email is sent through Mandrill, a service from Mailchimp. It handles the message for us and sees your address in order to deliver it.

Every email has an unsubscribe link. When you unsubscribe we keep your address, marked as unsubscribed, so that we never email you again by mistake. If you would rather we deleted it completely, email us and we will.

The form uses a hidden field and a short script to tell people from bots. That script does not track you and sets no cookies.

If you email us

If you write to hello@thornshorthand.com, we keep your message and address so we can reply. We do not sell data, run ads or build a profile of you.
